Tools
We will be using MacBooks in class with the application Visual Studio Code (aka VS Code). Students do not need Chromebooks for this class.
Students will receive a dot grid notebook for class warm-ups and for sketching out your design ideas.
Saving Work Done in Class
Because students will be using shared computers with four other classes, they will receive a flashdrive (or "thumbdrive") where they will backup files they're working on along with any images created.
We will go over:
- how to save your work
- how to move your files to the flashdrive
- how to eject the drive properly
- how to load your files the next day so you can keep working on them
Each student will be responsible for backing up their work at the end of every class period.
Flashdrives will be stored in the classroom and students can keep them after summer school is over.
Collaboration
There are no grades in Summer School (yay!) but each student will be building a personal website by combining the knowledge they've gained in our daily lessons.
Because we will have a range of ages and experience in this class, not all students will work at the same pace. Please be patient and respectful of each other.
During lab time, students encouraged to quietly discuss their projects and assist each other if Ms. Dukes is helping another student.
Web Use in Class
Because we're building websites, there are times when students will need to go online. Students should only be using the websites referenced during class or linked on this class website. They may also use the web to get information and imagery for their personal websites.
Students May Not:
- Watch videos on YouTube or elsewhere
- Log into personal accounts like their school Google account
- Play games online (Exception: Games linked on the "Fun" page of this website are allowed if they've finished early for the day.)
If students don't follow the web use policy, they may have their computer taken away for the remainder of the class period. They will spend the remainder of class on offline assignments.
Additional Notes
The school has an "Away All Day" phone policy, so all cell phones need to be silent and stashed away during class.

No outside food or drink is allowed in the classroom except water bottles. Keep water bottles on the floor or in a bag so there is no chance of water spillage on the MacBooks!
AI Policy
We won't be doing any vibe-coding or using genAI imagery, and no AI has been used in the creation of this class. The code editor we're using has AI features available, but we won't be using them.
